De Matsushita Electric Manufacturing Company is opgericht in 1918 door Konosuke Matsushita (1894-1989)

In 1927 werd het merk "National" voor het eerst gebruikt door Matsushita bij de introductie van een verbeterde fietslamp. In 1931 werd het eerste radiotoestel geproduceerd, een 3-lamps ontvanger. In 1932 werd de missie van het bedrijf geformuleerd:

"The mission of a manufacturer is to overcome poverty by producing an abundant supply of goods. Even though water can be considered a product, no one objects if a passerby drinks from a roadside tap. That is because the supply of water is plentiful and its price is low. Our mission as a manufacturer is to create material abundance by providing goods as plentifully and inexpensively as tap water. This is how we can banish poverty, bring happiness to people's lives, and make this world a better place". 

De grootschalige export naar de Verenigde Staten start in 1951 met een studiereis van Matsushita naar dit land. Dit was tevens zijn eerste reis buiten Japan. Daarna ging de expansie snel, Matsushita werd de grootste fabrikant van elektrische artikelen ter wereld met merken zoals National, Panasonic, Technics en JVC.
